About Us

"Building Better Athletes"

The name Phillips Hockey is one that goes back over 30 years in Southern California. Steve's father, Gary Phillips, not only created one of the largest hockey retail stores in the country, but also worked with numerous local organizations through donations, designing of team logos, and much more. Opened in 1981, Phillips Hockey Shop grew to become a supplier to the entire Western United States and Japan. Prior to the influx of online stores, Phillips Hockey Shop closed it doors to the public in 1993. The Phillips family would continue to consult over the next several years on various projects including equipment research and development, along with product marketing.

Steve Phillips Bio

Founder of Phillips Hockey and Ex-Professional Hockey Player

Steve Phillips, a former member of the Tampa Bay Lightning organization, was forced into an early retirement from professional hockey by a rare digestive disease in 1996. Over the next year Steve spent his time in recovery creating a one-of-a-kind skill development program for hockey players of all ages. After a successful first year of coaching 18AAA in 1997, Steve decided to reopen Phillips Hockey, however now the focus was player development.

Today at Phillips Hockey our goal is to create a learning environment that provides our students with the basic skills needed to improve, while making the game of hockey more exciting for each individual player. Our basic philosophy is "Hockey Made Simple"©, which simply refers to the breaking down of each individual skill and demonstrating not only how something is done correctly, but also how and why it is done incorrectly. This method increases the students understanding of each particular skill and allows them to develop the skill very quickly, along with establishing a higher level of self-confidence in our students as they begin to skate faster, handle the puck better, and shoot harder and more accurately. With guaranteed results and former students competing in over 25 junior, college, and professional leagues around the world, you can see why training with Phillips Hockey is a right choice.
